The AWCA has experienced tremendous growth during the last 16 years and has become a voice for black female Chartered Accountants. A voice that is sought when dealing with issues affecting the profession and those of national importance. As I reflect on the significant strides made during the terms of my predecessors, Ms Lindiwe Mthimunye, Ms Babalwa Ngonyama, Ms Sindi Mabaso-Koyana, Ms Tryphosa Ramano and Ms Lesego Sennelo, I remain in awe of the stewardship of these amazing leaders and the board members that supported them. I intend to build upon this strong foundation by ensuring that the AWCA maintains the relationships established thus far, while also recruiting more allies of the AWCA and extending the AWCA family. 2018 marks the centenary of struggle stalwarts Mam’ Albetinah Nontsikelelo Sisulu and Tata Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela. The former, a silent but powerful force in the liberation struggle; the latter, the icon at the forefront of the liberation struggle. The strength demonstrated by Mam’ Sisulu is a reminder of the great resilience that is inherent in every woman. She was one of the lead organisers of the monumental Women’s March to the Union Buildings on the 9th of August 1956 where more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings protesting laws compelling black African women to carry passbooks. This year we lost another one of South Africa’s great anti-apartheid heroes, the Mother of the Nation, Mam’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who stood steadfast in the notion of gender and race equality. Her passing inspired a national movement for solidarity and highlighted the sacrifices and pain she and many other women suffered in order for us to experience democracy and emancipation. It was a glimpse of the potential impact women can achieve if they work in solidarity. We not only celebrate these stalwarts but acknowledge and build on the legacy they left behind Overall, 2018 has been a very eventful year for South Africans... there has been strong winds of change in our political, economic, and social environment but one thing remains constant... women empowerment is still relevant on the agenda of South Africa Inc. There is still a long way to go to ensure women representation in both public and private sector leadership is reflective of South Africa’s demographics. The AWCA has achieved the following new milestones in the year to date:

Launched the ITC Preparatory Workshop for Honors and CTA graduates who wrote the first qualifying board exam in January 2018.
Launched a Financial Wellness programme supported by Allan speaks to re-establishing the Gray. This programme forms part of our work-readiness programme for first year article clerks
Awarded bursaries to a record high of 14 beneficiaries for the 2018 academic year. This was made possible with support of BCG, IDC and the Old Mutual Masisizane Fund.
Launched the Inaugural Fundraising Golf Day which was hosted on the 20th of April 2018. This initiative was championed by our 2017 Woman of Substance ® ,Dr Thandi Ndlovu
Hosted a series of four Mahube Round Table Discussions, supported by Thebe Investment Corporation, which aimed to facilitate the development of entrepreneurs within the AWCA membership.

While the AWCA has done well to address the needs of aspirant Chartered Accountants (CAs), our next task is to stay relevant to this pipeline as they progress in their leadership journeys. This entails programmes that are responsive to the needs of more experienced CAs. Although the AWCA has seen some significant achievements, it would be remiss not to acknowledge the string of events that have a dented the positive reputation and confidence that the Chartered Accountancy (CA) profession had enjoyed until a year ago. Issues of ethics, governance and independence have punctuated public discourse regarding the plethora of issues facing the CA profession. It has become paramount that AWCA amplifies its voice and lends its weight to activities aimed at restoring confidence in the CA profession and promoting responsible corporate and social citizenship. To this end, we have hosted a Round Table discussion on “The current state and future of the profession” and issued a few thought leadership pieces, some of which have been featured in leading media publications. This is not a once-off discussion but one that requires a series of interactions, dialogue and initiative under the theme “Build to Last”. This theme speaks to re-establishing the fundamentals of good governance in the profession, public sector and private sector. These fundamentals are the foundation we need to restore the credence to the CA profession. The board has chosen and cornerstone of all the activities carried out in 2018. Although the situation seems bleak at the moment, all is not entirely lost. Now is the time for all stakeholders to work profession. We as AWCA, stand ready to work with all stakeholders including SAICA, IRBA, AGSA and other member bodies, to restore the credence of the profession and as part of our outreach programmes we continue to encourage young women to pursue the CA profession. As we continue to chart forward in re-building the brand of the profession, we are aware that the work of the AWCA would not be possible without the support of you, our stakeholders, who find alignment with the vision and mission of the AWCA. By allowing us to stand on your shoulders, you not only make our initiatives possible, but a resounding success! To the backbone of the AWCA: the board, advisory council, sub-committees and our office managers who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to the AWCA, our labour of love, I say “May your love, passion and enthusiasm for the AWCA continue to grow and show itself in the work that you do.” Finally, congratulations to our 2018 Woman of Substance®, Dr Judy Dlamini, the phenomenal recipients of the AWCA Recognition Awards and the AWCA ambassadors corporate and social citizenship. To this end, we have hosted who continue to fly the AWCA flag high. May we keep the theme of “Build to Last” as we carry out our daily duties and make decisions within our spheres of influence!

The Woman of Substance Award brings with it new challenges to your personal life: excitement at the honour bestowed, anticipation over what it means and added responsibilities to your already full life. In a world daily grasping with increasing inequality, poverty, injustice and subjugation of women, our responsibility as leaders of society becomes about how we add our bit to the struggle towards reversing these ills. AWCA, through this award, hopes to utilise the recipient’s standing in society to mobilise resources towards achieving their stated goal of increasing the number of African Women Chartered Accountants entering the field. My experience over the past year is that this is a mammoth but achievable task. What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like). Where does it come from? Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32. The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham. Where can I get some? There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable.
